Chapter 7

Sylvester’s smile had never been smugger. His gaze slowly traveled over me. “That was interesting. I always knew you were weird, just like the rest of the gaming geeks, but I didn’t realize you were literally insane.”

I dug my nails into my palms. “That was a private conversation. You shouldn’t have crept up on me and listened.”

“And you shouldn’t have had a private conversation about your mental instability in a public office.” He shifted his weight onto the balls of his feet. “I know you treat this place like it’s your home, but for those of us who have actual lives, we know the difference.”

I turned away, my cheeks hot as anger built inside me. “I need to get to work.”

“No, no, no. What you need to do is convince me not to tell Gideon everything I just heard.”

I froze then glanced at Sylvester as he moved to stand beside my desk, still looking disgustingly smug. “Why would you do that?”

“For fun? Because I don’t like you? Because I don’t feel safe working in an office with someone who is clearly troubled and potentially dangerous. Pick an option.”

“We all have issues, but I’m a threat to nobody.”

“The fire you set in the washroom shows otherwise.” He picked up a miniature wizard figurine I’d hand painted in black and gold and turned it over. “Your false confidence may charm Gideon, but when he learns the truth, your time here will be over.”

I snatched the figurine from his fingers and placed it back in its proper position on my desk. “Why do you hate me so much?”

His top lip curled. “Because you’re too good to be true. You’re the golden boy, and you don’t deserve that role. You don’t take advantage of what you have. All the options are sitting there, and you ignore them.”

“Because I’m good at my job doesn’t mean you get to hate me. You stick to what you’re good at, and I’ll do the same. We don’t even have to speak to each other.”

“I’m not talking about your ability to code or make up those ridiculous role-playing scenarios that get the loners and morons hot under the collar. Anyone with no social life or friends can make up loser junk like that.” Sylvester gestured across the empty office. “I’m talking about all the opportunities you pass up here.”

“What opportunities? I’m head of division, the games I put out land in the top ten on the chart, and I’m giving a keynote talk at the Excel Masters next year.”

“Not those skills, numbskull.” Sylvester shook his head. “You’re so dense that it can’t be an act.”

“What am I supposed to be acting out?”

“All the women in Stardust Industries want you!” He yelled the words at me. “Most of the time, you act like they don’t even exist. You’ve got them fluttering around your desk like thirsty bees after the nectar, and you’re only ever nice to them. I’ve seen you give so many of them the brushoff. What’s wrong
